The Ampersand Hotel

The Ampersand Hotel draws on its South Ken locale: bird sketches that could have flown from the Natural History Museum, and musical motifs that riff on the Royal Albert Hall. The beds are blissfully comfy, and there’s an excellent basement restaurant with pretty cocktails, a tempting menu and an affable head chef.

The hotel’s location takes some beating: just a hop and a skip from South Kensington Tube station, which is on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines (www.tfl.gov.uk), within walking distance of some of the city’s finest museums, shops and galleries.

Small Double

These snug rooms (12 – 15sq m) are ideal for weekend breaks, sleep two comfortably and have oversized velvet bedheads, indulgently soft white bedding and neutral-hued planet and phial wallpaper inspired by the Science Museum. They include free WiFi, an LCD TV with films on demand and a minibar with free soft drinks. There's a modish black-and-white tiled ensuite bathroom in each room with Malin + Goetz bath products. These cosy rooms are best for one or two night stays.

Superior Room

Generously sized and refreshingly bright, the Superior Rooms have either a double, queen-size or king-size bed (please note, these are allocated on arrival, the king-size is subject to availability). The ensuite bathroom is stocked with a medley of luxury Malin + Goetz bath products. and features either a spacious walk-in shower or a bath/shower combination. Room extras include free WiFi, an LCD TV with movies on demand and free soft drinks from the minibar. The compositions artfully etched out on the feature wall and crotchet-print cushions make this room a haven for music enthusiasts, too.

Deluxe Room

With an arty, ornithological theme, these Deluxe Rooms are inspired by drawings found in the Natural History Museum and include either a double or king-size bed. The rooms feature luxurious touches, such as oversized velvet bedheads and either an indulgent chaise longue at the end of the bed or a relaxing armchair. Walk-in showers can be found in many of the monochrome ensuite bathrooms, and Malin + Goetz bath products are stocked in all. There’s 24-hour room service, free WiFi, a LCD TV with movies on demand and free soft drinks available from the minibar.

Deluxe Studio

With botany-inspired decor, these spacious rooms are perfect for longer stays. Each has a king-size bed and a roomy separate sitting area. Nine of the 12 studios have extra TVs in the bathroom – those that don’t have huge, freestanding tubs in the bedroom. All bathrooms have Malin + Goetz bath products. Each Deluxe Studio also has free WiFi, an LCD TV with films on demand, an iPod dock, a minibar with free soft drinks and a Nespresso machine.

Suites

The one-bedroom suites situated on the fourth and fifth floors each boast a king-size bed, skyline views of London, floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony. With playful bursts of neon and geometric-patterned wallpaper against an otherwise neutral backdrop, the suites also have a kitchenette with a microwave and a spacious separate sitting room. The well-proportioned monochrome ensuite bathrooms have a freestanding bath, walk-in shower and LMalin + Goetz bath products; for those staying in Kensington suites, there is also a built-in TV in the bathroom. Along with a minibar (with free soft drinks )and free WiFi access, the air-conditioned suite has an iPod dock, Nespresso machine and LCD TV with movies on demand. For those travelling with families, two of the five suites can be interconnected with Deluxe Rooms.
