Sublime Comporta

Calling something sublime sets up certain expectations: Sublime Comporta doesn’t disappoint, thanks to its sleepy bucolic setting (in easy reach of Portugal’s best beach), minimalist design – all glittering glass, white wood and modernist va-va-voom – and delicious Portuguese food. This handsome hotel’s romantic rooms and cosy cabanas occupy a bucolic 17-acre patch of woodlands and wildflowers, home to a knee-weakening pool with a fire pit beyond it, designed for sultry, sociable nights. If you go home without trying the suckling pig, scarlet prawns or the other wonders the chef finds in the hotel garden, from local fishermen and at nearby wineries, we haven’t done our job properly.

Sublime Comporta sits in a stunning 17-acre estate, south of Lisbon, on Herdade da Comporta: a swoop of coast between the Sado Estuary and the sea. One of Portugal’s best beaches is just a 15-minute drive away.

Friend's Room Queen

The best bit of these rooms is the private terrace, which surveys a spectacular landscape dominated by umbrella pines. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead from each 35sq m room onto the terrace; back inside, there’s a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a rainfall shower. Each of these rooms also has a TV, air-conditioning, underfloor heating, a coffee machine and free WiFi. These rooms are in the main hotel building, which isn't suitable for little Smiths under 13.

Friend's Room King

Gaze contentedly upon a jaw-dropping landscape dominated by umbrella pines from the terrace of these rooms, which are positioned along the corridor of the main house. Each 35sq m room has a king-size bed, a TV, free WiFi, underfloor heating, air-conditioning, a coffee machine and a bathroom with both a bath tub and shower – one of the rooms has a specially adapted bathroom with grab bars for wheelchair users. Floor-to-ceiling doors open onto the private terrace, and one room has a fireplace. You'll also have access to the hotel's spa, living space, library and honesty bar. As this side of the hotel is more of a grown-up scene, these rooms aren't suitable for little Smiths under 13.

Guest's Suite

These suites occupy their own private building, adjacent to the main house. Each 45sq m suite features open-plan spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and indoor and outdoor areas that overlap, including a private terrace. Each has a king-size bed and a mezzanine bathroom with a walk-in shower, meaning you can maximise the lounging space in the bedroom and living areas. Owner's Suite

If you like the idea of having the whole of the main house’s top floor to yourselves, book the encouragingly named Owner’s Suite, which offers plenty of space and privacy. Additional reasons to bed down here include the two terraces (accessed via floor-to-ceiling glass doors), one of which has a Jacuzzi. Spy on the surrounding countryside and the hotel’s pool from your hot tub. The king-size bed is pretty special, too, boasting a headboard fashioned from hunks of tree trunks. The open-plan 50sq m suite also has a sofa, a fireplace and underfloor heating; there’s also a TV, sound system and free WiFi.
