New Hotel is an arty party pad in central Athens. It might be in a Modernist Fifties building, but it’s completely cutting edge inside, courtesy of the Campana brothers and their eye-poppingly daring design. Expect slick staff, a restaurant serving food that’s as original as the decor and frequent fun nods to Greek culture.

These 20sq m–23sq m rooms overlook the side street, and several have a balcony from where to enjoy the view. The decor references either Karagiozis (a mischievous character from Greek folklore) – with carved shadow puppets covered in gold – postcards of the old city, or the evil-eye motif, often in LED form. The ensuite has a bamboo floor, speakers and a brass sink. Each room has a queen-size bed, flatscreen TV, radio, iPod dock, free WiFi and Apivita bath products.

Overlooking the side street from its balcony, these rooms have a similar contemporary design to the rest of the hotel.
