Locanda Rossa

Rows of sentry-like olive trees shelter child-friendly boutique hotel Locanda Rossa – a striking russet-hued farmhouse and colourful presence in the Tuscan hinterland – with a resident donkey, Penelope, and an eco-friendly ethos. Bambini are warmly welcomed, with a pool and playground to themselves. Older Smiths can relax in the huge, urbane rooms hung with modern artwork, and linger over delicious dinners in the laid-back osteria.

The hotel’s deep in Maremma’s countryside with little around except acres of precisely arranged olive trees. Piccolo hilltop comune Capalbio is a five-minute drive away, and the coast’s peaceful beaches are 15 minutes’ drive away.

Bright and modern, and hung with curious contemporary Italian artwork (Bruna Biamino’s photographs, Tristano di Robilant’s glassware or Giovanni Rizzoli’s abstracts), these rooms (14q m) sit on the hotel’s first and ground floors. Some have panoramic views of the countryside, all have a double bed and ensuite shower room. There’s an LCD TV with satellite channels, WiFi, kettle with a selection of teas and instant coffee, air-conditioning, and toiletries. Two of the Locanda Room can be connected.

These 14sq m rooms have wooden floors, original artworks, a double bed, an ensuite bathroom with a shower, and a small private garden with a table, chairs and parasol. Opening out onto the Maremma countryside, these 110sq m apartments – a short walk from the main house – are set across a three-floor villa. The rooms are accessed from the garden via a staircase, which leads down to the basement. Here, there is a living room, master bedroom (with a double bed), a second bedroom with twin beds and two bathrooms (one with a bath tub, the other with a shower). On the ground floor, there’s a large living room, fully-equipped kitchen (with an oven, microwave, coffee machine and toaster) and a garden with a dining table, sunloungers, a barbecue and parasols, along with two parking spaces.
