La Bandita Townhouse

Like a seamless crossfade from choral music into a bona fide hit, La Bandita Townhouse has undergone a satisfyingly successful transformation. This renaissance palazzo, whose discreet doorway sits just past the Cathedral of Pienza, was once home to 500 nuns until it was discovered by Sony hotshot John Voigtman, who gave up chasing rockstars to transform this creaking villa on a cobblestone lane into a chic Tuscan restaurant with rooms – maintaining its mediaeval walls and beams. The result? Music to our ears.

The hotel is at the front of the old town – which, confusingly, is at the very end of the main street. To get there, 200 metres after the main road turns left for Montepulciano, look for the first sharp-right turn which is the entrance into the old town.

Overlooking the quiet village lane or the private walled mediaeval garden, these 25sq m rooms showcase period features such as stone walls and exposed beams in a clean-lined contemporary setting. Each has a comfortable queen bed and and ensuite with a walk-in rainfall shower, plus a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, air-conditioning, hair dryer, minibar and desk.

Superior

These high-ceilinged 35sq m rooms are modern in design but dotted with period features including wooden floors and beams and exposed stone walls. Rooms have double beds with a sofa that converts to a single. There’s a walk-in rainfall shower in the enuite (some rooms have separate bathtubs too), plus a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, air-conditioning, hair dryer, minibar and desk.

Junior Suite

These 45sq m rooms feature authentic touches such as wood floors, wood beams, exposed stone walls and high ceilings. Suites on the top floor have breathtaking views of the surrounding valley, whereas lower-level suites have their own separate sitting rooms. Suites include a double bed and sofa that converts to a single. Bathrooms are equipped with both walk-in rainfall showers and freestanding bathtubs. Each suite also has a desk, flatscreen TV, free WiFi, air-conditioning, hair dryer and a minibar.
