Forestis

We prescribe a stay at Forestis, a former sanatorium turned cure-all hideaway with its head in the clouds (at 1,800 metres above sea level) in a particularly scenic patch of the Dolomites. The treatment: an ever-present view of a mighty massif, which can be seen from all the stylishly minimalist rooms; the restorative powers of the mineral-rich waters from the hotel’s spring; lungfuls of fresh mountain air; a temperate climate; and a generous helping of sun-filled days. But Gaia is aided by a spa that takes cues from the original wellness influencers, the ancient Celts, offering sauna sessions with spiritual sounds, druidic meditation, massages with healing woods, a Tyrolean take on yoga and a dip in the indoor-outdoor pool with one hell of a view. The stay operates in Earth-kind ways, serves hyper-local ‘forest cuisine’ and cocktails infused with spruce, larch or pine, served at the world’s highest bar too.

Deep in the Dolomites, close to petite village Palmschoss on a slope of Plose ski resort, at an altitude of 1,800 metres, sits Forestis amid pine trees and frosty peaks.

Cosy, calm and chic: these 35sq m rooms (for up to two guests) are minimal in style, with white walls and linens and wooden floors and furnishings. Each has views of the mountains, and one has a small balcony too. There’s a king-size box-spring bed which faces the window, a desk, TV and minibar. The stone bathroom has a walk-in rain shower and you’ll have free WiFi, a Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit and Forestis bath products.

Suite

Set in the historic part of the hotel – formerly built to be used as a sanatorium – these 50sq m suites (for up to two guests) are lined in local pine and all enjoy views of the Dolomites’ mighty peaks. There’s a south-facing balcony from which to admire the scenery, and within there’s a separate seating area with a corner sofa, desk, minibar and TV; a bedroom with a king-size box-spring bed and a vanity; and a stone bathroom with a rain shower and bidet. Plus you’ll have free WiFi, a Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit and Forestis bath products.

Tower Suite

Stirring mountain views come as standard with these 55sq m suites (for up to two guests), set in the hotel’s newer block. Each has a private terrace with a double day-bed and a window wall so you can wake up to an alpine panorama. Decor is simple to give deference to the view, with wooden walls and flooring and a stone bathroom with a bath tub, rain shower and twin sinks; and there’s a powder room with a bidet. There’s a seating area with chairs, a corner sofa and traditional tiled stove, and a king-size box-spring bed. Plus you’ll have a walk-in closet, minibar, TV, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free WiFi and Forestis bath products.

Penthouse

At the top of the more modern tower, this vast 200sq m duplex suite (for two guests) is at the height of the hotel’s hideaways too. Decor is minimal, using wood panelling, stone flooring and large glass windows, but there are plenty of above-and-beyond extras here. On the lower level there’s a large open-plan living and dining area with a bar, wine fridge and minibar filled with alcoholic drinks (including stone-pine gin) – the first round is free but refills are charged. There’s also a tea- and coffee-making kit, Marshall speaker, sink and a table set for four guests. There’s a corner sofa to relax on and a TV inlaid into the wall, and glass doors lead to a large furnished terrace with 180-degree views of the Dolomites.The bedroom has a king-size box-spring bed and a window wall so you can admire the view, and the bathroom has a bath tub with leafy views, twin sinks and a huge walk-in shower; there’s a guest powder room too. On the upper level, there’s a private sauna and second shower, and a second terrace with a heated pool and sunloungers. Plus you’ll have free WiFi, a Nespresso coffee machine, desk and Forestis bath products.
