Batty Langley's

With the name Batty Langley, you’re destined for great things; the same is true of Batty Langley’s hotel, which delivers Georgian fun and frolics in London’s fashionable Spitalfields. Rewind a few centuries, minus the scabies and scrofula, at this witty and eccentric hideaway, whose bedrooms and bathrooms hint at a healthy sense of humour. Days here begin with bacon-stuffed sandwiches or smoked-salmon bagels – best enjoyed in bed – and end with a civilised tipple or two in one of the lounges. Batty is no one-hit wonder: its esteemed siblings include Hazlitt’s in Soho and Clerkenwell-favourite, the Rookery.

Batty Langley’s enjoys a prime Spitalfields perch in east London, a short stroll from arterial Liverpool Street Station and fashion-scene Shoreditch.

The historic romance continues in the comfortable Club Double rooms, which are generously decorated with pictures and antiques. The bedroom has a 17th-century carved oak bed and the windows are dressed with heavy silk curtains or wooden shutters. The bathrooms attached to these 19sq m rooms boasts restored period plumbing features and fittings – pick from a theatre-style cast-iron bath tub, or period-style shower. These spacious double rooms each have a bed with an ornate frame: some are carved from 18th-century mahogany, some from antique carved oak. Each room has an ensuite bathroom, styled with historic flair: they all have interesting restored fittings and either a roll–top bath or overhead shower and high-level cisterns.

Lord it over London like an earl in this aristocratic 66sq m suite, which sprawls across two levels and boasts a large, sunny terrace. The enormous canopy bed was built for a bishop (sadly we don’t have enough space here to tell you its rather naughty story). Up-to-date fittings include a concealed flatscreen TV with media hub and Apple TV. The suite has a desk, well-stocked minibar and Land and Water bath products. The marble bath in the bedroom is a Tuscan antique; there’s also a bathroom with a walk-in shower.
