It’s not the first ancient abbey to be reincarnated as a boutique hotel in Tuscany, but Badia di Pomaio might just be one of the most stylish. Sequestered high in the hills over Arezzo, this gently landscaped estate looks suitably timeless (if you ignore the sleek valley-viewing infinity pool) but step inside the sandstone building and you’ll be wowed by how designer Ilaria Miani tempers its rustic materials with stark statement features. The restaurant refreshes traditional Tuscan fare, the bar serves with invention and rooms are as restful as they are refined. Those who delight in detail will find themselves right at home here. (Oh, and don’t miss the wine cellar).

Standard with View

One of the main building’s smaller but cosier rooms with a simple, hushed feel – perhaps the room that best reflects its monastic past. Windows look out over the sprawling valley and the Chianti hills from every corner. The bed is king-size with an orthopedic mattress for ultimate comfort and the bathroom has a rainfall shower. Handpicked metal vases and angular lamps accompany the wooden furniture; the flat-screen TV is cleverly hidden to not interrupt the aesthetic.

Superior Room

Each unique room in this category reflects some aspect of the building’s ancient history (not least the beamed ceilings). Open-plan storage maximises the space, beds are handcrafted and king-size (with an orthopedic mattress for ultimate comfort) and some bathrooms feature double sinks carved from a single piece of stone or a standalone bath tub; all feature rainfall showers. There is a hidden flat-screen TV, too.

The valley, the hills around Badia and down to the city of Arezzo are the views in question and they can be spied from every part of the 20 sq m room – even from the rainfall shower. The bed is king-sized with an orthopedic mattress for ultimate comfort (twin beds can be requested, depending on availability), there is an open closet for optimum storage, a hidden flat-screen TV, a host of handcrafted objects and antiques decorating the room and original beamed ceilings.

Junior Suite Dependance

These 43sq m suites are spacious and bright, with three large windows overlooking the hotel's internal courtyard and artisan furnishings throughout. There's a king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom with a rain shower, and a small living area with a sofa. You'll also have WiFi, two TVs, air-conditioning, handmade kimono and bathrobe, organic toiletries, minibar, and tea-making facilities.

Junior Suite - II

Look up and your eyes will be drawn to the ancient beam in the centre of the room, look down and you’ll gaze fondly at the free-standing bath tub. Between the two, a single piece of furniture cleverly functions as both headboard and desk, facing the room’s two olive-grove gazing windows. The bed is king-size (with an orthopedic mattress for ultimate comfort), there’s a hidden flat-screen TV and the bathroom has a rainfall shower, the aforementioned tub (although it’s technically in the bedroom) and two separate stone sinks.

These spacious 40 sq m suites are bright and airy with an armchair or sofa (or a large extra bed on request, for an extra charge) for relaxing and taking in the olive-grove views.
