Artist Residence London

Even casual doodlers are welcome at boutique hotel Artist Residence London, a rakish 10-bedroom retreat in prim Pimlico. One could well imagine Francis Bacon or Lucien Freud spattering paint on the cosy rooms’ reclaimed wooden boards or ruminating in the Loft’s bed, which has a field-gate for a headboard. Add tastefully shabby touches – tea-crate drawers, milking-stools, antler chandeliers – pop prints and animal etchings and you have a new muse to inspire your own abode. And, the Cellar bar's painting-themed libations will awaken a whole new appreciation of art.

The hotel’s shabby-chic interiors are fronted by a Thomas Cubitt-designed Regency townhouse, on a quiet street in Pimlico. It’s close to many of London’s iconic sights; Buckingham Palace and Westminster are both a pleasant 20-minute walk away.

Set on the first floor, there’s a blue room with prints of Ming vases, navy blankets and reclaimed wood furnishings, or a pink room with Pop Art prints and a blush-pink blanket on the king-size bed. Dainty cornicing and bespoke vintage-style furnishings make these petite stays very stylish. Metro-tiled bathrooms have high-powered rainfall showers and full-size bath products. Small Plus Room

Tucked away in the roof eaves, these intimate rooms are decorated in preppy tartans and earthy hues, and one has a handsome red-brick feature wall. There’s a king-size bed, bespoke reclaimed-wood furnishings and bold prints in the walls. These handsomely dressed rooms on the second floor have a super king-size bed (with a button-back leather headboard), vintage furnishings and limited-edition prints on the walls. Medium Double or Twin

Exhibiting the same artful style as the Medium Rooms – with reclaimed wooden flooring, vintage and antique statement pieces and limited-edition art prints – these 20sq m spaces are located in the eaves at the top of the house. Guests can slumber in a soft super king or twin beds (please advise the hotel when booking) and there's a small seating area. The bathroom has a rainfall shower, and rooms have a flatscreen TV, Roberts Radio, Smeg mini fridge, kettle with a selection of Joe's teas, Nespresso coffee machine, biscuits, bathrobes and slippers, and Bramley natural bath products.

The Loft

The Loft sits in the eaves on the third floor. A window looks out over London’s rooftops. Bespoke furnishings include a king-size bed with a reclaimed-gate headboard, emerald-green velvet armchairs and there’s a vintage 1930s French-style bath tub in the metro-tiled bathroom, alongside a powerful rain shower. There’s an exposed-brick feature wall and driftwood panelling throughout; limited-edition prints hang on the walls.
