Artist Residence Cornwall

If pirates were around today, they’d have one eye on Artist Residence Cornwall. Set in a dashing Georgian pile in the heart of historic Penzance, this boutique hotel is a bold and beautiful collection of one-of-a-kind rooms styled by local artists and the expert house team behind the Artist Residences in Brighton and London. The rustic-industrial Clubhouse restaurant turns seasonal local produce into tasting plates and home-smoked specials, while next door in the lounge a roaring log fire greets guests returning from a bracing coastal walk. Penzance is almost at the tip of Cornwall’s toe; Land’s End is a few miles down the road. The Artist Residence is in the most characterful part of town, amid boutique shops and colourful Regency-style houses on historic Chapel Street.

These charming bedrooms have king-size beds and feature vintage furniture and colourful prints; each room is individually decorated with squashy armchairs and antiques. These rooms can be found on the ground, first or second floors and vary in size (between 16-18sq m). Pitched ceilings and exposed beams bring plenty of vintage charm to these 20sq m rooms. It’s cosy with bags of style, with leatherbound seats, a soft king-size bed dressed with a woollen blanket, colour-pop art prints, retro accoutrements and a distressed wooden barn door that slides back and forth in front of the bathroom. The ensuite has a rolltop bath tub and shower (Room 9 has a bath tub romantically placed in the bedroom) and a rainfall shower, windows overlook the street or garden, and all rooms have a desk, wardrobe, flatscreen TV, Roberts DAB radio, free WiFi, minibar stocked with local goodies, Nespresso coffee machine and tea-making kit, and Bramley bath products.

The Chapel Suite

There’s no mistaking the Artist Residence’s inimitable style and this 45sq m suite has it in spades. Barnwood doors are painted emerald and sly blue, there are tasselled chandeliers, rattan footstools, velvet sofas and mid-century and upcycled pieces, and plenty of head-turning artwork on the walls. There’s a super king-size bed, a comfy lounge with a seating area and freestanding brass bath tub, plus a separate bathroom with a rain shower. Tucked away in the eaves on the third floor, with views towards Marazion, St Micheal’s Mount and Newlyn, this 40sq m room sleeps up to three. It’s outfitted in the Artist Residence’s inimitable shabby chic, with ceiling beams, eye-catching artwork, velvet-upholstered seating, plenty of pattern and texture, and a striking bronze rolltop bath tub in the ensuite (as well as a rainfall shower). There’s a soft king-size bed in the main room, a living area and a cosy single room (a baby cot can be added on request too).
